Reading and Phonics

To support your children's learning in phonics, we use Letters and Sounds and the Jolly Phonics schemes.

For reading, we have a wide range of different books and schemes for the children to choose from. Some of these are phonics based but there is a large variety to encourage all of the children wo develop a real love of reading. We have graded the books according to levels of difficulty and children will be moved through our schemes when they are ready by the class teacher.

Some of the schemes we have include: Phonics Bug, Oxford Reading Tree, All Aboard, Big Cat, Story World and Song Birds.

In Reception and Year 1, children are heard read in school individually on a regular basis. We hope that parents will support this by regularly reading at home with their children as well. See our Homework and Reading booklets for more information. From Year 2, the majority of children's reading within school will be done through group guided reading sessions. There is still an expectation that children will read with an adult regularly at home. This expectation continues throughout your child's Primary Education years.
